“An offering for Sarah”…..
Sarah Ann Ferry Pearson was born on February 20th, 1857, the first child for Jane and Thomas. On the 14th July, 1859, the family moved over to live on the Island in the Light House keepers quarters. On February the 18th, 1861, Sarah ‘took ill of Scarlet fever’ and on March 7th, Sarah passed away having just turned 4 years of age.
March 7th, 1861 – This morning, 8.50 am, my poor ‘Salley’ was taken away sixteen days today since she was taken ill, went over to the mainland and made all necessary arrangements for my poor girls last house. May my child’s soul have the last repose which none but God can give, is the prayer of her Father.
The next entry in the journal read – “My son William born”………….Jane gave birth to another baby the same day her first born child died!
How very sad……. my heart goes out to ‘the keepers wife’……
